Jet Set Satellite
By Moneeza

Jet Set Satellite - perhaps a name you may not be familiar with, but trust me you soon will be. Jet Set Satellite played the Canadian Embassy in Trafalgar Square last night, for an industry only gig, which was their first London or rather, UK show for that matter. So I guess I was pretty honoured to be there. The place wasn't packed with people, as you would expect at a normal gig. It was just a whole load of people from the music industry all there to check them out and offer support. Everyone holding their wine glasses or beers and a few snacks commenced into the performance room to watch JSS perform. They took the stage and hit off with 'Lies By The Thousands' the first track of their debut album 'Blue Print.' A nice melodic acoustic intro leading into something a bit more heavy and powerful. The use of organic instruments like acoustic guitars, tambourines, keyboards etc. was quite unconventional but effective and they pulled it off well.

There were a few commentaries in between the songs, Trevor telling us how he wished he could tell us we were a good looking audience but he was too blinded by the lights to see any of us. I can settle that for you Trevor, we were a good-looking audience! Haha. It was a really laid back show as the crowd was small which made it more intimate and the correspondence between the band and audience was cool. Even though everyone wasn't really violently moving about to the music but rather just standing or sitting there, we all seemed to watch on in awe. A few of the crowd got going when they covered 'Mother' by Danzig. Considering the song 'Mother' being fantastic anyway, it was still a damn good cover version, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The reception was fantastic and perhaps the highlight of the gig.

They played other songs off the album such as 'Best Way To Die,' 'Baby, cool your jets' and 'Blue Print' a song which was originally going to be a theme for one of Trevor's sci-fi movies he has a passion for writing. These guys have already begun to write songs for their second album, which will be recorded hopefully this year. Some of these songs we got to exclusively hear, were called 'We're above this' and 'Holding on, Never letting go.' The varied use of instrumentation even though it was something more of an unplugged set, Trevor's clean vocals and generally good musicianship has left a bit of an impression upon the London crowd tonight.

They are a band that plays really well live and no doubt they themselves enjoy playing live and doing what they do best. So definitely check them out. It may not be your cup of tea, I don't know. When I first heard them I immediately compared them to Vast and Days of the New, and they told me that a lot of people have made that comparison which in my eyes is a good thing. However, there is still more to them than that comparison. Their album is really good and once listened to over and over again you can't but not help singing along, to those catchy melodies and creative riffs. If you are considering checking them out then do so, as there is no harm in it. You never know you may go home adding a new band to your list of favourites.
