BLUEPRINT
Jet Set Satellite
(Nettwerk) ****/5
While their near neighbours in the USA throw out vast quantities of
commercially dominant bands, Canada seems content to offer quality in small
yet formidable doses. So it should come as no surprise to anyone that the
Jet Set Satellite highly stylised, classy and classic approach offers
sophistication without the attendant arrogance that so often blights bands
of this calibre. ‘Blueprint’ is the debut album from this duo, Trevor
Tuminski and Dave Swiecicki - who have a clear handle on the way to match
creatively challenging pop-rock songs with a dense sound that is very much
born from a love of, and dedication to, the early 1970s. The intelligence
endemic in JSS becomes obvious from the opening shards of ‘Lies By The
Thousand’, and continues through such mighty moments as the atmospheric ‘The
Night It Went Too Far’, the title cut, ‘Baby, Cool Your Jets’ and
‘Afterglow’. If your bag is pop rock with a sinister edge and depth then put
this on your shopping list.
